Line Array Speaker Systems: When Does Your Venue Actually Need One?
For auditoriums, churches, event stages, or high-capacity venues, a few high-powered speakers placed on either side of the stage often aren't enough to ensure clear, even sound at every seat. This is precisely the challenge that line array speaker systems were designed to solve.
What Is a Line Array
Instead of using a few large, high-powered speakers, a line array combines multiple smaller speakers arranged in a vertical column (or a calculated curve), creating a near-planar wavefront that allows sound to travel farther and more evenly across the horizontal plane, while reducing comb filtering and phase cancellation between drivers — a common issue when using multiple discrete speakers.
Beam Steering Control via DSP
Modern line array systems integrate DSP (digital signal processors) that allow precise adjustment of each speaker's output angle within the array, effectively "drawing" the coverage pattern to match the exact shape of the venue — avoiding wasted sound energy directed at walls or ceilings, while minimizing reverberation that degrades speech intelligibility.
When You Actually Need a Line Array
Not every meeting room requires a line array — for spaces seating under 50–80 people, conventional ceiling speakers are typically sufficient. Line arrays deliver clear value in large auditoriums, churches, convention centers, and outdoor event stages — environments where clear audio must reach hundreds to thousands of listeners simultaneously.
Line Array Design Requires Careful Calculation
The number of cabinets, rigging angles, and the curvature of the array must be modeled based on the actual geometry and dimensions of the space — incorrect angles can result in very quiet sound at the back of the room while the front rows are excessively loud.
AZ Technologies designs line array sound systems based on coverage modeling tailored to each specific venue, ensuring consistent audio quality from the front row to the back of the auditorium.
