AV over IP: The Inevitable Trend for Enterprise Audio-Visual Systems

For many years, enterprise AV systems have operated on dedicated signal cables — HDMI, HDBaseT — connecting directly between sources and display devices. This approach works well at small scale, but begins to reveal limitations when facilities have multiple rooms and multiple signal sources requiring flexible routing. AV over IP was born to solve exactly that challenge.

What is AV over IP

Instead of transmitting video/audio signals via dedicated cables, AV over IP encapsulates signals as network data and transmits them over Ethernet switches — the same way computer data moves within internal networks. This allows any source to be routed to any display in the system, simply through software configuration rather than physically rewiring cables.

Why Enterprises are Moving to AV over IP

Three clear benefits stand out: transmission distance is no longer limited like traditional HDMI cables (which are only stable within about 15-20m without amplifiers); virtually unlimited scalability for the number of sources and destinations as facilities add more meeting rooms and displays over time; and the ability to leverage existing building network infrastructure when designed to proper standards — with dedicated VLANs for AV signals to ensure bandwidth and security.

Real-World Applications

AV over IP delivers the most value in large-scale facilities with multiple display points: office buildings with dozens of meeting rooms, training centers, university lecture halls, or command centers requiring flexible routing of multiple camera/data sources to multiple monitoring displays simultaneously.

Implementation Considerations

Not every "run over network" approach makes AV over IP effective. Three factors need tight control: latency — especially critical for applications requiring real-time audio-video sync; network bandwidth sufficient to support the number of concurrent 4K streams; and network security, because the AV system now becomes part of the shared IT infrastructure and must be properly segregated and protected. Choosing the right technology standards — such as AVPro Edge MXNet for video, Dante for audio — also determines the system's long-term compatibility.

As an official distribution and integration partner of AVPro Edge and Crestron, AZ Technologies provides design consulting for AV over IP systems tailored to each facility's actual network infrastructure, ensuring stable performance and future scalability.
